As part of the University-wide celebration of the National Women’s Month, the GAD Resource Center hosted a Voter’s Education Webinar on March 24, 2022. The webinar aims to help increase women’s engagement in elections by promoting good views of women as voters, leaders, and participants in all elements of the political process.
Ms. Sharon M. Isip, Dean, Office of the Students Affairs and Services, in her welcome remarks noted that this action will provide better and higher degree of awareness for the voters, particularly the vulnerable sectors, toward responsible, democratic, and long-term engagement in electoral and governance processes.
Dr. Hernando D. Robles, University President, on the other hand stressed that the activity will educate the attendance on the significance of the votes to be cast on May 9. He emphasized that vote of Juanas and Juans are important, for all of us, for the university, and for the country.
Ms. Shebana C. Alqaseer, Co-founder of Young Feminist Collective, spoke on “Si Juana at ang Halalan.” She emphasized why we should vote and how we should vote wisely. According to Ms. Alqaseer, it is our right, and it is the right thing to do and that our vote is very sacred and our decision alone. Moreover, she gave concrete steps how we can do our part in the era of fake news. She ended her discussion by highlighting the need of overcoming the long-standing bias against women.
Hon. Maria Lourdes A. Sereno, Former Chief Justice of Supreme Court of the Philippines, spoke on “Juana: Pumili nang Tama at Bumoto ng Tama.” She spoke on the constitution’s attempt to define safety by stating that there should be truth, justice, love, freedom, peace, and equality. She listed the qualities of a good leader as being knowledgeable, trustworthy, not selfish, and God-fearing. She stressed that elections are a one-of-a-kind means to replace many abusive, vicious, lazy, and irresponsible leaders with persons of character, skill, effort, and bravery.
Dr. Bettina Joyce P. Ilagan, Dean, College of Arts and Sciences, made the closing remarks. She reminded the Juans and Juanas that our votes are very important and believes that no one at CvSU will sell their vote, and that the university will choose a leader based on qualifications, experience, and quality, as well as integrity and honesty. She also advised everyone to rely on accurate information and if necessary, conduct fact checks and examine the sources of information before sharing it with others.
